The program leads to Pennsylvania Level I certification in Special Education for graduate students who hold an instructional certificate in another area of education. Students may enroll in either the Pre K-8 or 7-12 (Secondary) certification track within this program. The Special Education Pre K-8 certification may only be added to an already-existing Pre K-4, Middle Level 4-8, K-12 or Reading Specialist K-12 certificate. The Special Education 7-12 certificate may only be added to an already-existing secondary content area or Reading Specialist K-12 certificate.
These programs are intended to develop reflective professionals with philosophies based on respect for all people, acceptance of individual differences, and a belief in full integration and inclusion of students into general education.
Proficiency must be demonstrated by successfully passing the appropriate tests required for Pennsylvania certification.
*AADL (Adaptations and Accommodations for Diverse Learners: 3+1) competency equivalencies (EDSP-571, EDSP-572, EDSP-573 and EDUC-556 or equivalent) are prerequisites for professional requirements.

The degree requirements for the Master of Education with Pennsylvania Certification, Level I in Special Education, are 37 credits, which include the core requirements, professional requirements, electives, and the culminating experience. Students enrolled in this program require prior PA certification.
