Application Process

The University solicits applications for exchange visitors in all four categories (Student, Professor, Research Scholar, Short Term Scholar) and also responds to all inquires and unsolicited applications. Exchange visitor applicants are encouraged to communicate directly with the appropriate school or department in learning about undergraduate and graduate academic programs, and in the case of visiting professors or scholars, opportunities to teach, conduct research and consult.

applicationAll applicants must be sufficiently proficient in English to participate in the designated programs offered at the University. For J-1 visa student applicants, for both undergraduate and graduate programs, applicants must meet all academic prerequisites and admission requirements established by the sponsoring program.

The first step is to obtain from the University the Form DS-2019, Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor (J-1) status. An applicant’s visa cannot be processed without this form. Furthermore, applicants must have sufficient funds to cover all expenses, or funds must be provided by the University’s sponsoring unit, school or department in the form of a scholarship or stipend.

It is important that all materials for the J-1 Exchange Visitor Program application process be submitted together by the sponsoring unit, school or department in advance of exchange visitors finalizing their travel plans to the United States. The following forms and documents, including the Official departmental offer letter, constitute a complete application and are part of the J-1 Exchange Visitor Application Package Check List:
