Meet Our Peer Tutors
Sara Cashin
I am a 2006 Neshaminy High School graduate. I am a sophomore majoring in English/Secondary Education with a minor in Spanish, which is my primary interest. At the Center for Academic Enhancement, I tutor Spanish as well as English. I have had the pleasure of interacting with native speakers of the Spanish language through Holy Family, as well as the St. Mary Parenting Resource Center. On campus, I am actively involved in Fusion, which is the University’s multicultural club. Contributing to Tri-Lite, the school’s newspaper, in both Spanish and English columns, has enabled me to develop a deeper appreciation for, and understanding of, language. Realizing that learning a foreign language can be a difficult and frustrating task, my goal is to provide support and assistance to students of all skill levels. Please do not hesitate to visit me on the second floor of the Library. No question is insignificant! Everyone is respected and welcome.

Shawna Erhard
I graduated from Harry S. Truman High School in 2003. I am majoring in Secondary Education in Mathematics. I attended Penn State, Abington, for two years and transferred to Holy Family University in 2005. As a peer tutor, I want to help others to better understand math. I think students find it comfortable having a fellow student as a tutor, and perhaps I can also help out in some small group settings with questions students may have about the work. Math is a very hard subject for most people, but a little practice goes a long way! I think this tutoring experience will help enhance my teaching skills and help me better understand the different learning styles of students. I am a very patient and passionate individual. I enjoy helping others, and I feel that I am a very approachable person. Feel free if you have any questions; do not hesitate to come in and ask. Remember: No question is a dumb question!

Danielle Fortuna
I am currently a Junior majoring in Math with a minor in Chemistry. As a peer tutor, I hope to impart not only understanding of mathematics, but enthusiasm as well. In addition to grasping the material, I find that it is essential to absolutely value math. Although math sometimes looks like Greek, it is not a foreign language; it is a universal language. So, don't be shy: statistics show that five out of four people have a problem with fractions!!! Feel free to stop by the Center for Academic Enhancement for some academic enhancement.

Wayne Hefner
I am a 2003 graduate of Father Judge High School in northeast Philadelphia . I am currently a Junior majoring in Biology, with a minor in Communications, at Holy Family University , seeking to enter the field of medicine as either a surgeon or a pediatrician. I am also a student athlete, and am a member of Holy Family's cross-country and track and field teams. Here at the Center for Academic Enhancement, I am a biology tutor. I look forward to sharing my knowledge and experience in this field with you. Just like my fellow peer and professional tutors, I am dedicated to helping each student not only become a more proficient thinker and achiever, but a competent well-rounded individual who is prepared for the demands of today's society.

Melissa Hipwell
I graduated from Calvary Christian Academy in 2006, where I earned an A average in my AP English classes, held the position of Student Government President, and was Salutatorian of my class. During my freshman year at Holy Family University, I excelled in my honors writing course. I am currently a sophomore majoring in Elementary and Special Education.  Outside of the classroom, I am the Communications Officer of Fusion, Holy Family's multicultural club, and I am actively involved at my church. As a peer tutor in English at the Center for Academic Enhancement, it is my goal to help students with their writing skills, specifically by reviewing problem areas, assisting in the organization and development of ideas, and sharing my personal writing experiences and strategies.

Stephanie Hud
I am currently a freshman at Holy Family University, majoring in Nursing.  In June of 2007, I graduated from Saint Basil Academy, a small, Catholic, all-girls school.  In high school, I took Honors English courses during my sophomore and junior years, and I excelled in A.P. English during senior year.  I am a passionate bookworm, who loves authors ranging from Jane Austen to Agatha Christie.   Here at Holy Family, I am involved in the S.A.Y.S. group, which does community service projects, and am an English peer tutor.  I am willing to help other students with any struggles involving writing skills, reading comprehension, or anything else relating to English.  I hope that by seeing my love for the English language, others may fall in love with it too!

Heather McGuire
I graduated from Central Bucks West High School in 2007. Holy Family was the university that I have always wanted to attend to continue my education. I am majoring in Psychology, and I am hoping to get my teaching certificate so I can eventually become a guidance counselor. I have always wanted to help students and teach them skills that they will need throughout their lives. I am looking forward to peer tutoring because I will be able to help others improve their skills in writing and critical reading. This experience will be very beneficial not only to the students who need help, but also to me. I will be able to begin to teach students the skills that are essential in life. I am a very understanding and helpful person, who is willing to take as much time as necessary to help students in need. I want students to feel comfortable asking me for help and asking any questions that they have. Writing and critical reading are very important skills for students to master, and I am here to make that possible.

Aparna Skariya
I graduated from Cardinal Dougherty high School, Philadelphia, in 2007. I am currently majoring in biology, at Holy Family.  Science, particularly biology, has always been a subject of great interest and curiosity for me. Here, at the Center for Academic Enhancement, I tutor mathematics; I am always willing to provide an extra hand to those who are having a problem with math. I am also involved in the Albertans Science Club and the Social and Behavioral Sciences Club. I enjoy hiking and camping with my friends. I love tutoring, and find that it is the best way to teach and to be taught. My goal is to help the tutees understand the mechanics of errors that they make and share the joy of learning math. I welcome any questions and problems.  I'm looking forward to seeing what I can do for you, and can't wait for you to ask for my help!  Remember, always, what a famous teacher said: "The essence of mathematics is not to make simple things complicated, but to make complicated things simple."  ~S. Gudder
