Perioperative Course

The perioperative course is offered Thursday evenings, 4:30 to 7:20 p.m. at the Newtown campus. In addition to class time, the course requires a clinical practicum of at least 48 preceptored hours in the OR. We will place you in a hospital OR with a preceptor for the practicum. You will negotiate the days/times of the practicum with your preceptor. If you are employed in a hospital and would like to do the practicum at the hospital where you work, we will consider that if the hospital and OR manager are willing. The course is a 4 credit undergraduate level course. If you are not eligible for tuition reimbursement from your employer, the university does have a deferred payment plan. The instructor is an MSN prepared nurse manager of an area hospital who has over 20 years of OR experience.

To be eligible to enroll in the course you need to complete and submit:

  • Valid current PA RN license
  • Current FBI, PA Criminal and Child abuse clearances (within 12 months)
  • Current CPR certification
  • Proof of immunity to communicable diseases (positive quantitative titers - to measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, and hepatitis B)
  • Flu shot within 12 months
  • Negative 2 step PPD (or negative chest X-ray)
  • 10 panel drug screen within 12 months
