Crisis/Emergency Assistance
What is an Emergency?
A behavioral health emergency is an emotional or behavioral crisis that warrants
immediate attention by a behavioral health professional. This may include,
but is not limited to, significant changes in behavior that are not characteristic
of a person, the presence of disruptive symptoms that interfere with the responsibilities
of daily living, direct or indirect expressions of the intent to harm self
or others, or the experience of a trauma.
Daytime Emergency Services
The Counseling Center does not provide emergency services 24 hours a day,
seven days a week, but does offer support as described here.
On-Campus
The Counseling Center can provide crisis intervention on a limited basis. Students
may call the Counseling Center (267-341-3232) during regular daytime hours
to request an emergency appointment. Students requesting an emergency visit
at the Counseling Center are expected to accommodate the time offered for
an appointment, missing a class if necessary. Counseling Center staff
will try to accommodate requests for emergency assistance where possible but
may need to refer students to local emergency services (see listing below). Do
not send an emergency communication via e-mail, as e-mails may not be reviewed
regularly and are not guaranteed confidentiality.
Students should NOT leave an emergency message on voicemail if the counselor
does not answer the phone. Students who receive voicemail or cannot wait for
an appointment should dial Public Safety
on campus (267-341-3333). Public Safety can page the Counseling Center
Director and/or arrange for emergency transportation to a local hospital.
Off-Campus
When a crisis occurs and the student is off-campus, the student should call 911,
go to the nearest hospital emergency room for assistance, or the local crisis
response center (CRC). These and other local resources are listed below.
