Reading Specialists Research & InformationClearinghouse on Reading, English and Communication Located at Indiana University, the Clearinghouse gathers and disseminates information about reading and literacy for parents and educators. The "Children's and Adolescent Literature Resources" is an especially comprehensive list useful for educators, parents and students. LD (Learning Disabilities) Online - Reading This collection of articles, written for the lay person, discusses reading and learning disabilities. No Child Left Behind: Reading First This page answers basic questions about the Reading First initiative of the No Child Left Behind act. Assessment and Evaluation Buros Institute Located at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, the Institute publishes the Mental Measurements Yearbooks, and promotes responsible, appropriate use of assessment tools. Children's Literature Web Guide Organized by a librarian at the University of Calgary, Ontario, Canada this web guide gathers and categorizes sites concerning literature for children and young adults. Children's Picture Book Database Located at Miami University, this database contains abstracts of over 4000 picture books. The database is searchable by topic, concept or skill. Associations There are many associations dealing with reading and literacy. Try the sites below for lists of various organizations: Literacy Community This list of organizations is provided by the International Reading Association. American Federation of Teachers A trade union representing educators and others, the AFT (AFL-CIO) represents over one million workers. "Web Resources" links to many useful sites for educators. Center for the Improvement of Early Reading Achievement CIERA, located at the University of Michigan's School of Education, does research and disseminates information about reading issues and problems. International Dyslexia Association Since 1949, the IDA has provided a forum for researchers, parents, and teachers to share information. Keystone Reading Association Pennsylvania's chapter of the International Reading Association National Council of Teachers of English NCTE provides support for, and services to, teachers of English. National Education Association A voluntary organization of over 2.5 million people, the NEA is devoted to professional development and to lobbying efforts as well as other activities. National Reading Conference This professional organization promotes research and shares information about literacy and literacy instruction.
