Ways to get along with your
roommate
Make a good first impression. Be friendly and take some time to know each other.
Set up ground rules. Fill out the Resident Connections sheet your RA gave you
when you arrived on campus.
You don't have to be best friends. Don't think you need to have to hang out with
your roommate 24/7-make other friends. This person you live with should be a
food roommate, nothing else.
Communicate. Ask to borrow things, set up guidelines and talk when things are
bothering you.
Be a good listener. Listen when your roommate talks to you. Being a good listener
entails more than just hearing the words the person is saying.
Always be courteous and considerate. Treat your roommate with the same respect
and consideration that you expect.
Say "No". Saying no is the best way to prevent a conflict before it happens.
Use your RA or Area Coordinator. These folks are here to help you and have been
trained in mediation skills to help individuals through intense situations. Agree
to disagree.
Do something fun together. Go to lunch and talk about issues, or go off campus
to get away for a little bit.
Have fun with it. Realize that living on campus is a part of the learning experience
at Holy Family. You will learn a lot about yourself and others if you keep an
open mind.
