Art Gallery Exhibition Schedule for 2009-2010
11/4-11/24 "Faith via Design"
Andre Teixeira Senior Exhibition
Opening: November 5, 6-8 pm
Andre Teixeira attended William Tennent High School in Warminster, Southampton, and graduated in 2005. He believes that "Art is something that should never be missed in the school setting." This particular school had a great art program, in which his potential as an artist began to emerge. Andre continued his study of art at Holy Family University. Drawing and painting were his first two passions. By the Spring semester of 2006, Holy Family University's Art Department expanded his point of view in art making. The mastering of skills as an artist's priority faded while the importance of concept began to take over his focus. He began to see his drawings and paintings as mere beautiful representational images whereas he found that he could convey much more through sculpture. Andre currently lives in Southampton, Bucks County. As an Art Education undergraduate at Holy Family University, he uses his teaching as fuel for inspiration. He keep in mind that "I am first an artist always." Inspired by the art and culture of his Portuguese heritage, his thesis work represents familiar icons that have been revolutionized through elements of design and formalism. He simplifies each sculpture to a mere ethnic interpretation while staying fairly true to some folk and traditional elements. "It is my design and beauty of form" that keep his work visually cohesive. By focusing on design, he can offer viewers a fresh perspective on the heart of Portuguese art and its spirit. Andre hopes "that viewers find my sculptures to be enlightening, or spiritually uplifting." For Andre art has helped him get closer to his own culture as well as his faith.
