Social Sciences/Secondary Education Certification
For those with an interest in high school teaching, this program leads to certification as a high school social studies teacher. This is an extensive program which requires courses in psychology, sociology, history, economics, anthropology and geography in addition to education. Students also choose an area of specialization within the social sciences and take additional courses and seminars in that area. This area of specialization will normally be in the discipline the students hope to teach in high school, but they will obviously be prepared to handle a number of content areas.

Visit the School of Education for further information related to Secondary Education.

Social Studies/Secondary Education Certification
Holy Family University has developed a certificate program reinstating Social Studies as an area for secondary education certification. The rationale for this move is the versatility of the certificate, and the reciprocity available in neighboring states for this certification.

Social studies is attractive to secondary education students interested in teaching history, psychology, sociology, and political science. We continue to offer the citizenship and social sciences certifications since none of these programs is radically different in the major components of the content areas. The state requires that all certification areas follow the content of the major discipline, but since there is no major in social studies as such, this variation on a theme gives students an opportunity to consider content under the broader term accepted by educators in primary education. Therefore, social studies certification is a third option for secondary education students interested in this area of study.

Sociology
Sociology majors will find a variety of career paths in social services, government and civil service, human resources, research, and administration. Our sociology program provides a solid foundation in theory and research methods and is an excellent choice if you want to seek advanced education in law, social science, or human services.

Classes for sociology majors include:
  • Social Theory
  • Race, Class, and Gender: Diversity and Inequality
  • Psychology of Human Development
  • Adult Development and Aging
  • Addictions: a Lifespan Perspective
