Habitat for Humanity (HFH) is a non-profit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry.
HFH seeks to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world, and
to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE?
All Holy Family University students with a minimum GPA of 2.75 (unless
approved by the Vice-President for Student Services) are eligible to
apply for a Habitat for Humanity mission trip position. Applications
will be available mid-September in the Activities Office and interviews
will begin in October. The selected students will then begin group
fund-raisers and team meetings to prepare for the mission trip during
first semester.
WHY DO IT?
Nationwide there are more than 30 million Americans living in substandard
housing. As a Catholic University, the mission of Holy Family is “teneor
votis,” meaning “I am bound by my responsibilities.” As
members of this community we are blessed with the opportunity to truly
live our mission and deepen our global awareness through volunteering
to build homes for poverty-stricken Americans. Participation in a Habitat
for Humanity trip is a life-changing experience for everyone - socially,
educationally, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually!
WHEN and WHERE?
In the spring of 2007, 10 Holy Family students and two chaperones flew to Violet, Louisiana to build homes in the Ninth Ward, a parish (county) close to New Orleans. The group ate, showered, and slept at “Camp Hope,” a restored elementary school about 30 minutes from the work site. This year’s trip will take place during the week of spring break (March 17–24). The destination may be New Orleans, but could be California, Tennessee, Georgia, South Carolina, Kentucky, or any other area in need.
HOW IS IT POSSIBLE?
Through fund-raising, the Holy Family University Activities Office intends to send a group of students on a mission trip again this year. All students chosen for the group (after an application and interview process) will help with future fund-raisers and actively attend bi-weekly meetings to learn about Habitat for Humanity, what your role and responsibility will be on the trip, and to develop a team dynamic.
