Well, we’ve arrived! After a short trip from Philadelphia to JFK, and a much longer trip from JFK to Venice, we’re on Italian soil and ready to start our journey!
Our first stop was to the hotel to unpack and relax in Venice, where we had the day to explore and catch up on sleep before enjoying a delicious pasta dinner at night.
After trying to recover from the jetlag, we sluggishly left the hotel for a guided tour of St. Mark’s Square, Campanile, and the Grand Canal (thanks espresso shots and cioccolata for the pick me up). We also visited Doge’s Palace and watched a glass-blowing demonstration! Everything was incredible, but seeing St. Mark’s Square, or Piazza San Marco as its known in Italian, is an early candidate for best moment of the trip.
The cornerstone of St. Mark’s Square is St. Mark's Basilica, a grandiose church full of tradition and history. Your eyes can’t help but notice the architecture and design of the church as you approach, featuring dramatic arches and marble. The inside of St. Mark’s Basilica was just as beautiful, with its domed ceilings, marble floor, and incredible mosaics.
Seeing pictures online do not properly depict the beauty of Italy. I can’t wait to see what is next on this journey, but so far, it has already been an incredible experience!
