First and foremost, congratulations on a job well done. We all know that life in this post pandemic world will be different, but with the changes will come new opportunities for you as a graduating student.

Norman Vincent Peale, the famous religious philosopher once said, “Become a possibilitarian. No matter how dark things seem to be or actually are, raise your sights and see possibilities -- always see them, for they’re always there.”

Do not be afraid to hold your head up and look at options that are available to you. There will be new jobs created inside of new businesses, all being formed out of this tragedy that the country is going through today. As you step out, there will be some uncertainty, do not let it keep you from trying something different with your life.

Remember what our great President Abraham Lincoln once said about the future, “The best thing about the future is that it only comes one day at a time.”

Lift your head high, look forward and embrace what is to come and just take it one day at a time. Again, congratulations and best of luck.

Congratulations Seniors - do not let this stressful time diminish the fact that you have been able to achieve this accomplishment through years of hard work. I would like to give you sage advice but I am going to do what I often tell you to do - “google it”. I have attached a link for you to read - take a few minutes - I know you don’t like reading - but the message here is helpful. God bless you all - and when the world goes back to normal - please don’t forget where you came from - Holy Family University! Good luck.

Congratulations! This will be a year to remember. On top of all the classes and knowledge you have from your time here, you learned a great deal about “stress management” in the past two months, and that experience too will stand you in good stead.

I have two ideas or thoughts to pass on that I use in my Project Management classes.

First, when you apply for a position / job remember that you are also interviewing the firm. Look closely at the culture of the organization. Will you be comfortable there? Will they be comfortable with you? Think about and evaluate the culture.

Secondly, an important management principle that I learned in the Army and I use often. When you go to the “Boss” with a problem, come with a recommended solution. Too many “subordinates” take problems to the “Boss” and expect to be given the solution. The “Boss” expects you to solve the problem! Have a recommended solution! It may not end up being the ultimate solution but it is a starting point and the” Boss” will appreciate that. It is your job to solve problems too.

Good Luck! We are all here if and when you need us.

For those of you who are about to step into the yellow wood, my advice is to follow your passion. Even though there may be rough patches--like now--doing what you love to do provides the true and prosperous path for you and the world. For ages and ages, this has worked for me:

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
    To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
    Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
    Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

    -Robert Frost

Congratulations to all of our Seniors! I am very proud of each and every one of you. You have reached the finish line and can now move onto the next chapter of your lives whether it be graduate school, that first professional job, starting a new business, or just smelling the roses for a while! You have all worked so hard and have learned so much. You are well prepared for that next chapter. Trust your education and put it to work for you. Rely upon it. It will serve you well.

Remember, we will be there for you should you need us. You have spent at least four years at HFU. We remain your family. If you need career advice, a shoulder to cry on, or just a sounding board, always feel welcome to come back and visit. I have heard from many former students who share their successes, seek guidance, or just want to say “hi!”

I am sad that we will not see you at Commencement. All of our lives have been impacted by this awful pandemic. I hope that all of you can celebrate your achievement in a way that is special and meaningful with family and friends; if only at a distance! :)

No previous graduating class faced the challenges confronting the Class of 2020. But no other graduating class is as well prepared to overcome these challenges as this year’s graduating class. Your professors shared with you their extensive business knowledge. Perhaps even more importantly, they shared with you their business experience.

From my perspective, the School of Business Faculty embodies the University’s core values of family, respect, integrity, service, responsibility, learning and vision. These core values provided me with direction throughout my career in the fire service and in public safety. I believe that your education and these core values, embodied by the faculty and staff of our University, prepares you for all future challenges. My sincere best wishes for a long and successful career and remember, be careful out there!

In addition to the excellent thoughts of my colleagues, I want you to take a few things with you as you go. First, our congratulations! It is not easy being a college student and many of you work full or part-time. Second, graduation is always traumatic, job search is painful, and the transition to “real life” is difficult. We are here to help with all of that and more. Finally remember why you came to HFU.

You came to learn more about business and to develop job skills, both technical skills and soft skills such as problem solving. You came here to be part of a collegial experience - to learn from your peer group and from your professors and from the Deans. You also came to be part of something bigger than yourself, to be a member of an institution that cares about you and wants you to succeed. Overall, you came here better prepared to make contributions to your family and to society.

Remember that none of this goes away when you leave. We still want you to learn, we still want you to be part of the HFU family, and we still want you to succeed. Please let us assist you at any time and in any way that we can.

Congratulations on making it to the finish line at Holy Family. I am so proud of you all and you certainly deserve a pat on the back for what you have done. Your future's so bright that you need sunglasses!! Know that being our student is not really over … You have a lifetime pass to contact me or any of us when you are in need. Whether you want to share a ray of light or a tear, we will be there for you. You have done a great thing but you will do so many other great things in your life. Be prepared for life as it tries to trample you but also be prepared for incredible joy. Try to make the most out of every day. And know you are loved.

I’m attaching a little snippet that carried me in times of trouble and times of joy. I dug this out of my calendar from 1992 - almost 30 years ago now. It still stands up today:

I’d Pick More Daisies by Nadine Stair, age 85

If I had my life to live over again, I’d try to make more mistakes next time. I would relax. I would limber up. I would be sillier than I have been this trip. I know of very few things I would take seriously. I would take more trips. I would climb more mountains, swim more rivers and watch more sunsets. I would do more walking and looking. I would eat more ice cream and less beans. I would have more actual troubles and fewer imaginary ones. You see, I am one of those people who lives sensibly and sanely hour after hour, day after day. Oh, I’ve had my moments; and if I had to do it all over again, I’d have more of them. In fact, I’d try to have nothing else. Just moments, one after another instead of living so many years ahead each day. I have been one of those people who never go anywhere without a thermometer, a hot water bottle, a gargle, a raincoat, aspirin, and a parachute. If I had it to do all over again, I would go places, do things and travel lighter than I have.

If I had my life to live over, I would start barefooted earlier in the spring and stay that way later in the fall. I would play hooky more, I wouldn’t make much good grades except by accident. I would ride on more merry-go-rounds. I’d pick more daisies.

    Dear Wonderful People,

First, let me say I am profoundly sorry that your time at HFU had to end in such a strange and confusing manner. It is a loss of last times with friends, classmates, professors, and involvement in campus activities.

I assume many of you are nervous about what opportunities the job market may or may not offer to you. The best advice I can give is to be positive and PROACTIVE. This may be an opportunity for all of you. This pandemic will significantly alter how business is conducted going forward. The business world will be much more technological, remote, and impersonal. Many will be unable to adapt and thrive in this new environment, so it is an opportunity for all of you to capitalize on. You have all grown up with advanced technology skills, you are accustomed to learning/doing things remotely, interacting through technology and Video (Facetime), and have not been ingrained with a need for in person and deep interactions constantly. This sets all of you up for success and quick adaptation to the changes to come in the business fields. I experienced this type of shift early in my legal career. When I started practicing law the bankruptcy field went completely to online filings and procedures. A large number of bankruptcy attorneys walked away from the practice because they could not adapt, or did not want to adapt, to the new technology driven process. For me, the technology made it easier, therefore, I was able to move in and capitalize by taking a large share of the bankruptcy client market.

Network! It took me a while to learn the importance of networking and mastering it. Actively networking, meeting people, and putting yourselves out there will put you in a better position to get desirable jobs. All of my career moves have come about solely because of networking and cold calling people; none of it has come by mass sending out resumes and online job applications. Remember to not just be a taker in networking, but also try to give at every opportunity you have. You are leaving HFU with a fantastic network already built in, your Professors. We are all experienced and knowledgeable in the fields many of you are entering, therefore, we have a wealth of advice & knowledge, as well as contacts. Take advantage of this!

Lastly, constantly work on yourselves, and put your mental and physical health before everything. One piece of advice I got that made an impact is, “How can you truly love someone else and be the best you, if you cannot even love yourself?” If you feel anxious, down, or experience negative and defeating thoughts (intrusive thoughts), be proactive and address them and learn to love and accept yourself for the awesome people you are. I will leave you with a story I would tell the teams I coached at Nazareth before every season:

    The Good Wolf

One evening, an elderly Cherokee brave told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people. He said, “my son, the battle is between two ‘wolves’ inside us all. One is evil. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego. The other is good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith.”

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, “which wolf wins?”

The old Cherokee simply replied, “the one that you choose to feed.”

Good Luck, God Bless, Wash Your Hands, and Always Remember to FEED THE GOOD WOLF!

    - Paul S. Peters III, Esq.

The situation in our country may look unexpectedly grey; however, this is when you can find your true self and uncover your inner talents. Look for new trends in your industry and/or profession; apply your skills and adapt yourselves. Learn new skills; think of turning a hobby into a business. You may take an unexpected or more challenging path than anticipated today to get there. Above all, separate yourselves from negative people, from those who attempt to take your spirits down, and from those who are constantly criticizing you; they are not worth your time and energy. Circle yourselves with positive thinkers and people with real vision. Remain positive and definitely focus on your dreams. Yes, you can do it!

Two years ago I graduated cum laude from Holy Family University after seven years of going part-time. I wish I could have bottled the feelings. Happiness, accomplishment, possibility...pure joy. It is now two years, one layoff, two long job searches, and one ""almost-but-not-quite-new-job"" later (thanks covid-19). I could sure use those May 2018 feelings right about now! But, I know things will get better.

I am forever proud of my degree, of myself, and of those years working and "momming" and studying and going to classes. I'm grateful that I was able to walk across the stage at commencement. My thoughts are with all of those 2020 graduates that can't experience that this year. But, it's funny, I don't remember what was going through my head while I walked across the stage. That wonderful cocktail of feelings had started the moment I attended my last class and handed in my final paper. It continued for weeks after commencement. So, no matter what, walking or not, you'll always remember the feelings, you'll always remember the accomplishment, you'll always remember feeling proud.

We need strong people. We need people to have a fresh look at problems facing our world. We need people to stand up to tremendous problems and not backdown to erroneous pressures. Our community needs truth and knowledge. Our world is counting on all of you to be our best future. Your celebrations were cut short, but believe me you will continue to prove your worth. Celebrations will come and are never late. In 2019, I received my degree in nursing after 30 yrs of nursing with an RN diploma. I faced the AIDS epidemic and numerous progressions in medicine. Everything is possible, and there will be many celebrations to come. Congratulation, and you will always be apart of history. Love a fellow Alum

Hello Everyone Class of HFU 2020...Your Resume includes these words: RESILIENT, INNOVATIVE, FLEXIBLE, COURAGEOUS, DETERMINED, COMMITTED.

I am Kim Trojak, CRNA, BSN Holy Family University 1983, Nazareth Hospital School for Nurse Anesthesiology 1991, MS, St. Joe's 1993. I am a self made person. My graduation memories are wonderfully boring commencement ceremonies and dinners and friends. I thank our Lord Above for these wonderful memories. (Especially now!!).

YOU came from many stories but YOU ALL have the pandemic as a graduation farewell story. Go out there and tell the world you are RESILIENT, INNOVATIVE, FLEXIBLE, COURAGEOUS, DETERMINED, COMMITTED, .......a SURVIVOR WHO TAKES IT TO THE END GAME!!!!!

The minute YOU walked into Holy Family University, you began your commencement walk as you delivered assignments, attended classes, took your finals. Now, put those letters after your name and turn your tassel.

I welcome you into a hard earned club......Welcome fellow Holy Family University Alumni!!!!!!!

    Affectionately yours,
Kimberly Marie Trojak, CRNA, BSN, MS

The world, our country, my life, and Holy Family have all changed since I set foot on campus in September, 1960. Change is constant, except for the Ten Commandments which were written in stone, something that I tried to instill in my children.

So I congratulate you, the Class of 2020, on achieving your goals and attaining your Degree.

This moment in your Life will become a happy blip in your memory bank 60 years from now. What changes happen from now on and how you meet them are what matter.
