Alexa Bonacquisti, Ph.D. presented "The Relationship Between Acceptance and Commitment Therapy Processes and Psychological Functioning in Postpartum Women" at the Association for Contextual and Behavioral Science (ACBS) Virtual World Conference. The presentation was a collaboration between Dr. Bonacquisti and three doctoral students in the Counseling Psychology Psy.D. program, Elizabeth Becks, Kristin McMahon ’19, and Laura Prader ’19. Dr. Bonacquisti also delivered an oral presentation as part of a symposium with other professionals from the United States and the United Kingdom that focused on the use of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for treating birth trauma.

Vicki Brzoza, Ph.D., MSN, MBA, RN, CCRN presented “How to Successfully Educate Students in an Accelerated Second-degree Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program” at the Sigma Theta Tau International conference in November about success in an Accelerated Second-degree Bachelor of Science Program.

Patricia Griffin, Ph.D. was an invited participant and discussant on "Vocation and Profit" as part of the Economy of Francesco Global Event in Assisi, Italy, and invited to tour and meet with the leadership of Sophia University in Loppiano, Tuscany, Italy (October 2021). 

Patrick McElwaine ’00, M’04, Psy.D. presented “Thank You Recovery for Saving My Life” at the National Alliance on Mental Illness-New York State Education Conference Recovering Together; Achieving Mental Wellness (October 2021). He also conducted a workshop on Cognitive Therapy for trauma and youth for the Beck Institute with Rochester Regional Health (September 2021), a workshop on Cognitive Therapy for Depression and Suicidality for the Beck Institute with the United States Navy in Okinawa, Japan (September 2021), a workshop on Cognitive Therapy for Substance Use Disorders for the Beck Institute with the Ontario Association of Mental Health Professionals (OAMHP) (September 2021), a workshop on Cognitive Therapy for Substance Use Disorders for the Beck Institute with Rochester Regional Health in New York (November 2021), a workshop on Cognitive Therapy for Suicide Prevention for the Beck Institute with Central Nassau Guidance and Counseling Services in New York (November 2021), a workshop on Cognitive Therapy for Substance Use Disorders for the Beck Institute with the Louisiana Department of Health/Bureau of Family Health (January 2022), a workshop on Cognitive Therapy for Suicide Prevention for the Beck Institute with Stark County Mental Health and Addiction Recovery in Ohio (February 2022), and a workshop on Cognitive Therapy for Suicide Prevention for the Beck Institute with the Oneida Nation in Wisconsin, Green Bay (February 2022).

Michelle M. Murphy-Rozanski, Ph.D., MSN, RN, CRNP participated in a virtual international event in November for Citizen Diplomacy International Philadelphia to discuss the importance of education in nursing.

Bernice M. Purcell ’85 DBA was invited by Quality Matters to present a QM Success Stories webinar on March 24.

Melissa Rampelli, Ph.D. had the paper “Early Images of Trauma in George Eliot’s The Lifted Veil” accepted for presentation at the 2022 Interdisciplinary Nineteenth-Century Studies Conference and the paper “Marty South and Occupational Health” accepted for presentation at the 2022 Thomas Hardy Society Conference.

Raena Shirali, MFA was awarded the 2021 Hudson Prize Winner by Black Lawrence Press for her poetry collection summonings.

Edward A. Waddell, Ph.D. was awarded the Genetics Society of America Presidential Membership Award which provides recognition, free membership, and free conference attendance for diverse young career scientists and science educators. 

Publications

José Pablo Barragán, Ph.D., published the paper “De la muerte y la disolución: el arte del sida en la España postransicional (1981–1996)” in the Bulletin of Spanish Visual Studies.

Alexa Bonacquisti, Ph.D. published the chapter "Psychotherapy for Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders" in Women's Mood Disorders (Springer Publishing).

Patricia Griffin, Ph.D. signed a contract with Routledge Publishers to edit the book volume, Culture, Diversity, and Criminal Justice (publication October 2022).

Patrick McElwaine ’00, M’04, Psy.D. published columns in Psychology Today titled “Using the RAP Strategy to Think Positively” (August 2021) and Stigma and Abstaining from Mental Health Treatment (March 2022). He also published numerous columns for Treatment Magazine since September 2021 which include the following titles: “The Corrosive Effect of Hypersensitivity,” “Beware: The Holidays Are Coming, How to Have a Safe and Sober New Year’s Eve,” “Stay Connected- It Can Save Your Life,” and “‘I’m Tired- I’ll Go Tomorrow,’ and Other Recovery Traps.”

Edward A. Waddell, Ph.D., has had his manuscript, “Flying in the Face of Adversity: a Drosophila-Based Virtual CURE (Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experience) Provides a Semester-Long Authentic Research Opportunity to the Flipped Classroom” for his Neurobiology of Addiction course that he designed and taught published by the Journal of Microbiological Education.

Other

Patrick J. Casey, Ph.D. wrote an essay, "Stop Calling 'Wokeness' a Religion," that was quoted in an editorial titled "Is being woke a religion?" in the November 6, 2021 edition of The Boston Globe.

Pamela Flynn, MFA had an exhibit of her work, Facing Time, presented at the Ceres Gallery in New York City in January 2022.

Patricia Griffin, Ph.D. expanded evaluation of two new co-responder programs (beginning December 2021) in Bucks County to include Middletown Township Police Department and Falls Township Police Department. The Bensalem Township Police Department co-responder evaluation program has moved into the second year of operation and evaluation. Dr. Griffin was also awarded a two-year evaluation consultancy for the newly formed Bucks County Mental Health Court. The mission of the Bucks County Mental Health Court is to develop a partnership between the mental health and criminal justice system that will divert non-violent offenders with a serious psychiatric diagnosis from incarceration and who would benefit from therapeutic interventions, including stable housing, and who may be adequately supervised in the community.

Patrick McElwaine ’00, M’04, Psy.D. is currently supervising therapists/psychologists for the Beck Institute in New York, Philippines, Lebanon, and Saudi Arabia. He has recently completed providing supervision for therapists/psychologists located in Maine, Canada, New Zealand, and Poland. He also started a private practice (Dr. Mac and Associates, LLC) focused on delivering evidence-based treatments for clients who have mental health concerns including addiction, anxiety, depression, and trauma (January 2022).

Melissa Rampelli, Ph.D. launched the blog “The Fainting Couch," which examines the historical and contemporary representations of women’s emotional and mental health, at the Psychology Today website.

Ana Vizcarra Rankin, MFA had an exhibit of her work, Big Maps for a Small Planet, presented at Cherry Street Pier in Philadelphia in March and April 2022.
