Job Description:

Provides tutoring in specific disciplines to University students, and interacts with faculty and staff to promote the services of the Center for Academic Enhancement [CAE]. In conjunction with the Director, the peer tutor assists in regulating the use of hardware/software, assigning, promoting, and monitoring computer/internet usage within the Center.  Responsible for maintaining a record for each student tutored [e.g., appointment forms, client report forms, surveys, etc.]  The professional tutor never functions as an editor of the student’s work – the goal is to foster self reliance through assessment and assistance. 

Scope: The peer tutor works in the Center or may work remotely if providing online tutoring. Work contacts primarily include the Director of the Center, peer tutors, student support, faculty, staff and students. Equipment used includes standard office equipment and computers and must, within the first few weeks, be familiar with the Center’s online scheduling system

Supervision Received: The peer tutor will report to the Director of the CAE; the tutor receives general direction regarding routine and standard matters, and specific instructions regarding non-routine and sensitive matters.  

Supervision Exercised: No supervisory responsibility.

Representative Duties: Assists students at various content levels of assigned discipline; when appropriate, explains research strategies and documentation; assigns computer drills and self tutorials, other practice exercises, and Internet searches as needed;  assists students in completion and review of class assignments; assists students in preparing for exams; maintains student records using the online scheduling system; assists students with basic computer procedures, including signing in and using laboratory software; assists students in finding, understanding, and using computer and Internet-based instructional resources and aids; performs related duties as assigned; periodic preparation and presentation of relevant workshops, individually or as part of a presenting team; when needed, serves as a classroom coach while embedded in a specific class and communicates regularly and effectively with the professor of this class.

Knowledge and Abilities: Knowledge of specific discipline[s] tutored; general operational rules and regulations of the Center; basic software; college level content; research procedures and documentation styles; Internet search and usage.

Ability to tutor students using textbooks, workbooks, computers and Internet; maintain student and laboratory records; oversee use of hardware/software;  communicate effectively orally and in writing; establish cooperative working relationships with persons contacted in the course of performing assigned duties.

Qualifications: The successful candidate must be a current undergraduate student of the university and must excel in the discipline or related field appropriate to the contracted tutoring responsibilities.
