Application Information

Before you begin your application, please review these guidelines to help with the process.

The Graduate Program in Creative Writing strives to admit students who demonstrate both the creative and academic abilities required to be successful given both the rigor and unique format of the low-residency program. The ideal candidate will have earned a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and will have earned a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Application materials must include:

  • A personal statement that provides insight into the applicant’s desire to obtain an MFA, artistic vision, personal history of writing, potential contribution to the program, and readiness to meet the requirements of the program.
  • A writing sample consisting of original writing in the applicant’s primary genre (10-15 pgs. of poetry, 20-30 pgs. of prose).
  • Official transcripts from all previous institutions of higher education attended by the applicant. Official transcripts must be sent to the university digitally through parchment or a similar service. Transcripts should be sent to the gradstudy@holyfamily.edu email address.

Uploading Materials

In the application portal, once you upload your statement of purpose, the system will automatically refresh to the signature section of the application. Instead of signing and submitting the application, click on the statement of goals link again to return to the supplemental materials section of the application portal where you will have the option to "add another” document. This will allow you to upload another, separate file for your writing sample.

Please note, although there is an opportunity to upload a CV and letters of recommendation within the application portal, these materials are not required. You may leave these sections blank, and it will not impact your application.

Term selection

Students may apply to begin the program either during the fall term or the spring term. If you are applying to begin the program during the fall admissions period, you must select summer II as the start date within the admissions system because the program begins with the residency period held in late July/early August during the summer II term.
