Holy Family University is proud to offer a degree in Neuroscience, which is supported by our psychology and biology/natural science departments. Students in our Neuroscience program earn a degree that is truly interdisciplinary, yet flexible. Within the Neuroscience program, we encourage students to think critically in laboratory based courses and pursue hands-on research with faculty.

The diverse and interdisciplinary field of Neuroscience studies the structure and function of the nervous system and the interaction between the nervous system and behavior. The field of Neuroscience incorporates many subfields including areas such as psychology, biology, chemistry, and animal behavior, all of which are reflected in our program. Our Neuroscience major provides students with a unique opportunity to have a strong interdisciplinary background highly valued by prospective employers and graduate programs.

Program Highlights

Flexibility. Students have the opportunity to customize their major by choosing electives in upper division psychology, biology/natural science, and/or courses typically required for medical school admission requirements.

Interdisciplinary major. Students will be instructed broadly in fields of neuroscience, from molecular genetics and development, to cognition and emotion. Upon graduation students will have a solid foundation in the field of Neuroscience.

Major Coursework

The program in Neuroscience serves to provide students with a strong foundation in psychology and biology in first two years of study but still allows for the flexibility to customize the major in the last two years. In the freshman and sophomore years, students take courses in neuroscience, biology, chemistry, and physiological psychology. Beginning in the junior year, students have the opportunity to begin taking electives that can be completed by taking either psychology or biology/natural science courses. Therefore, depending on your interests, you can work with your Neuroscience adviser to determine whether you would like to complete your degree with more psychology, biology, or a combination of both types of coursework. In addition to these two routes, students interested in attending medical school have the opportunity to fulfill the electives in the junior and senior years with courses typically required for admission to medical school. All students in the Neuroscience major will take courses in the following areas:

Internships and Research Opportunities

Neuroscience students have the opportunity to gain experience outside of the classroom by participating in our Experiential Learning program at a site off-campus or through research with our faculty in the biology or psychology departments. Students who participate in research with faculty have the opportunity to present their work during Scholar’s Week each spring, at the annual SEPCHE conference (held in April), and other national conferences.
