Overview

The Mission of the Holy Family University Doctoral Program is to facilitate the development of effective and ethical leaders for schools and communities who can make significant contributions to their fields of knowledge through applied research.

With a Doctorate of Education in Educational and Organizational Leadership you will:

Become an effective and ethical leader for schools and organizations—capable of making significant contributions to your field of knowledge through applied research. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to deepen your knowledge and skills by specializing in one of the following four concentrations:

Organizational Leadership – Offers a business perspective on organizational leadership and prepares individuals to lead a wide variety of non-profit, for-profit, and community organizations.

School Leadership and Administration with Pennsylvania Principal Certification – Prepares teachers and other school personnel to obtain Pennsylvania certification to serve as a public school principal (pre-kindergarten through 12th grade).

School Leadership and Administration with Superintendent Letter of Eligibility – Prepares school administrators to obtain Pennsylvania certification to serve as a public school district superintendent.

Curriculum and Instruction with Pennsylvania Supervisor of Curriculum and Instruction (pre-kindergarten through 12th grade) Certification – Prepares teachers and other school personnel to provide leadership in school curriculum models and instructional practices. Individuals may also apply for Pennsylvania certification to serve as a supervisor of curriculum and instruction (pre-kindergarten through 12th grade) in a public school district (pending approval by the Pennsylvania Department of Education).

    As a graduate of the program, you will possess skills and knowledge to function as an effective leader in a wide variety of education-related fields. Completion of the principal or superintendent certification option will prepare you to pursue administrative positions in Pennsylvania K-12 schools. In addition, you may pursue leadership opportunities in fields such as higher education, non-profit community organizations, and educational publishing and consulting.

    Curriculum

    The Doctoral Program in Educational and Organizational Leadership is a fifty-four (54) credit program. These include 15 credits of research courses, 15 credits of leadership courses, 15-18 credits of concentration courses and a minimum of 9 credits for dissertation research.

    By following this course sequence, you will finish the program in three years and one semester. This timeline includes completing the dissertation, for which a high degree of structure and guidance will be provided. You will develop your dissertation research projects by selecting one of the following general topic areas: (a) Language and Literacy, (b) Disability, and (c) Post-Secondary Education and Assessment.

    * In close consultation with your advisor and the permission of the doctoral program faculty, you will choose a field of interest and establish a sequence of courses, which will meet your goals.
