Position Summary

This position will staff the library services desk as assigned, following procedures and directives set by the Access Services Coordinator. The employee will occasionally assist the Library Services team with collection maintenance and other ongoing library projects and will oversee student workers when the only staff member on duty.

Essential Functions

  • Checking in and checking out library materials
  • Prepares materials to be placed on the Interlibrary Loan and Hold shelves
  • Assists patrons in use of computers and printers
  • Plans and creates displays throughout the library
  • Assists in mailings and other tasks around campus
  • Assist patrons with locating materials and research of the library databases
  • Answers routine inquiries by phone, email, and chat and refers patrons in need of professional assistance to librarians
  • Assist with managing work-study students, ensuring their adherence to the position and shift times
  • Opens and closes the library, dependent on hours assigned
  • Any other duties are assigned by the Director

Education & Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Library and/or customer service experience is preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Working knowledge of Google Apps is required. Ideally the candidate will have experience using library websites and resources as either a user or library staff member.

Work Environment

  • Operates in an office environment that may have frequent interruptions
  • The area is well-lit, temperature-controlled, and free from hazards
  • Noise level is generally quiet to moderate

Physical Requirements

  • Communicates frequently, in person, over the phone, or via a computer
  • Hearing is needed for extensive telephone and in-person communication
  • Regularly required to sit for long periods of time; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms
  • Manual dexterity is needed in order to operate a computer keyboard
  • Operates standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines

Other Important Information

This position requires evening and weekend hours during the fall and spring semesters, currently 3:00 p.m. - 11:00 p.m., Sunday-Thursday. During summer and winter intersession, this position normally works during standard business hours (9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.).
